Just looked up Mr. Smith, because I thought of how much of an influence he had on me as a teacher, way back in the early 90's, thought I would thank him, and then learned that I was almost 10 years too late. I don't know if his family or friends will even see this, but I truly appreciate Mr. Smith, as a man, a mentor, and I am sorry that I never told him this in person. I was a student, when his own father passed, and he had a leave of absence, and came back and taught me through his actions what it really meant to be a man. I hope his own friends and family know how much of an influence he has been to me, and I am sure many other students, throughout his life. He will live on forever, in me, in others, and though I don't know his family, I am sure that he is looking down on you with his unlimited love.

I was the guidance secretary at South River High School until I retired in 2001. John use to come into my office and we would share a joke or two. He almost always had a smile on his face but when he didn't I knew he was upset and sometimes instead of a joke he would tell me what was going on. The students loved him. He was so proud of his family and loved them all so very much. I shall miss my e-mail buddy.

After graduating from high school in 1997, I wrote Mr. Smith a letter thanking him for everything he had ever taught me. It was lengthy and I was afraid the message would get lost in the wordiness. In responding, Mr. Smith told me that he had shared this letter with a student teacher. She immediately started crying. He said, "THIS is what teaching is all about. THIS is what makes all of the long days worth while." He was a very special man who appreciated our immaturity.... or excitement for life. He allowed us to goof off, tell jokes, cry about our problems and have a "nothing" day. We had MUCH respect for him. When it was time to be serious, he never had to fight with us. He LISTENED to us. He actually CARED about us. We never felt as though we were burdens or that being with us was part of his job. Graduation night, he gave us a pep talk in the auditorium before we walked the stage. We were told of the significance of the night and to remember that this was the last time that all of us would be in the same room together. He said that some of us would move and some would pass, but that we should cherish this moment. As he stood at the bottom of the ramp of the stage to send us off, he must have received a hug from each and every one of us as we went back to our seats. We loved him so much. There is a country song from the movie soundtrack "8 Seconds" that has always reminded me of him. Once in a While by Billy Dean. I am heartbroken to hear of the passing of the most wonderful teacher and friend that I could have ever hoped for. Mr. Smith was an amazing man. I graduated in 1997 from South River High School and was one of the many students whose lives were touched by his humor and life lessons. After graduation, I kept in touch with Mr. Smith. His teachings went beyond any history lessons or math problems. He was a mentor for life. He often spoke of his wife and children. I felt like I was part of the family. I wish I had the right words to say to comfort all of you as he did for so many of us. His laugh will never be forgotten. This world just got a lot less funny. Thank you for sharing him with us. Mr. Smith was one of those teachers that always cared more about a student's life, than the grade on their paper. Not to say that he didn't want his student to absorb his lessons, but he realized that the connection between a student and teacher could sometimes change a teenager's life. Mr. Smith was the co-sponsor of South River High School's class of 2002. As an active student, I had the pleasure of working with him closely. He gave his time willingly and generously when he didn't have to. He cared about us, each of us. During your school years, you probably will have 100+ teachers, Mr. Smith is one of the few that will stay the memories of thousands of students for their lifetime. My mother passed away my senior year, and Mr. Smith was right there to offer a hug, smile and sympathetic words. He allowed me to escape to his classroom when I needed a moment to myself. He allowed me to vent, to share, and to listen. I am ever thankful. My thoughts and prayers go out to his family. He was a very wonderful man who was taken too soon.

Mr. Smith was my teacher back in 1970 at Freetown Elementary school. He taught Social Studies. I remember that he was SO BIG but always had a smile. My best memory was when he let our class watch the World Series (when the Baltimore Orioles were actually good:) during school. I believe my class was his first year of teaching.

John was my hallway buddy at New Teacher Orientation. For three years we manned the same hall location for hours. We directed new teachers around the Old Mill campus. After the first year, I requested the duty with him for the next two years. I passed the time by listening to the most amazing stories. I was simply in awe of all of his experiences and was captivated by the passion of which he spoke. But more than that, he had such a natural way of making everyone who was around him comfortable enough to share their own stories. As we stood in the hallway, he knew just what to say to the new, young teachers. Most of these new teachers had never met John, but his warmth emanated and it was obvious that they felt an immediate kinship. Many would simply approach this man they'd never met before and share with him their own stories. John always had words of wisdom to share with them as they started their new careers in the profession that he so adored. It seemed that John knew teachers in almost every building in the county, and he always gave these new teachers contacts within their own building, who knew John, and whom he knew would take good care of them. It is with great sadness that John is no longer with us, but his spirit lives on. All of us who were touched by him will long hold him in our memories.

How sad to learn of the recent passing of an Awesome man. I met Mr. Smith when I started my Junior year at Meade High. Not only was he a wonderful teacher but he was also truly a very kind sole. My first year at Meade he would often ask me how I was doing and if I was making new friends. He was genuine and truly cared. I was touched several years after graduating from Meade (81) when I was at the Jumpers theater (yes - he treated us to a free movie that night) with a friend and he remembered me by name and took interest in my college studies. Mr. Smith was one of the few teachers that touched my life. Reflecting back I know that Mr. Smith is the reason that I eventually made my way to working in education. Today I feel blessed because he showed how wonderful it is to make a difference in the lives of so many - this is the reason I teach today and strive to make a difference. I will always remember John Smith as one of my favorite teachers. A ready laugh, a bowl full of insight and I remember that he was the first one to tell me about Jumper's Hole movie theatre where you could get discount tickets for cheap! Important when you didn't have a lot of money in those days. :) And then high school ended and like most, you move away and forget... ... and imagine my surprise years and years later to move back to the area and find myself unknowingly working with not only his son, but his daughter as well. It was a pleasant surprise and I will always remember the Smith family with a smile and warm thoughts. John was a beautiful being, and has a family around him to equal the same. I was saddened as I saw the email yesterday morning about Mr. Smith's passing. I chatted with him in 2007 at my 25 year reunion. We briefly discussed my doing some mentor talks or such as the school, and of course he asked what I was doing these days (he never stopped caring about his students). I thought about him occassionally--whenever discussing high school or when passing what used to be the Jumpers Cinema on Jumpers Hole Road, that they've torn down now (I still remember him letting my friend John Bolton and I in to watch movies for free). Like all of us with our busy lives, we want to stay in touch or reconnect, but we never make that moment happen. Mr. Smith will always be remembered as the teacher that didn't worry about teaching us what the text books said, but rather he tried teaching us about life. I always looked forward to his class. He connected with us, not as students, but as people soon going out into the world. He tried to his best to prepare us for that world. He was a true friend to all students. He was a great teacher. He was a great mentor. And he left a wonderfully indelible mark on many of us. He will be truly missed.

Mr. Smith was a great teacher and a great person. I have fond memories of him. He was my history and psychology teacher. He was great teacher because he made learning fun and interesting. He treated his students with respect and made them feel like they matter. It is rare to find a teacher that truly cares about their students enough to take the time to know them and understand them. Despite the fact that many years have passed since seeing or talking to Mr.Smith personally, the lasting impact of his kindness and humor on my life leaves me gripped with sadness for his loss. So sorry for your loss of a wonderful man. So blessed for you all to have had him the years that you did! Mr. Smith is the only teacher I have such wonderful memories of. I am grateful that I was able to tell him how much he meant to me as a teacher while he was still alive.

Like most of you, I just learned of John's passing and I am deeply saddened by the loss of this dear man who meant so much to all of us. As I'm sitting here wiping away my tears, it occurred to me that it would be easy to share stories about John that would make us all laugh, and God knows I did laugh when I was with him, but I prefer to remember John's generosity and his love for all of us. For me, he was the most generous of mentors. He spent countless hours with me when I was the new kid in the Social Studies department at Meade HS, always helping me to become the best teacher I could be. And how impressed I was with the love he had for his family. John and I drove together to Meade for 4 years and during that time I heard countless stories from the proud father and loving husband about his 3 children and his beautiful wife. What a love story!! And then there was you - his students. John truly loved each and every one of you and it's obvious from your FB comments, you knew it. That was his special gift. He made us all feel special and loved. So goodbye my dear friend. Rest well and know that your impact on our lives is as important to the historical record as that of kings, politicians, or generals. My sincere condolences go out to John's wife & family, mother Dot, sister Rhonda & brothers Jeff & Gail. Although it has been a lot of years since we all lived in Smithfield I have very fond memories of John. He used to come help out in our store..Baker's Newsstand when my mom & dad (Walter & Jane Baker) owned it back in the 60's. He was like a big brother I never had. He used to help me with my homework and laugh at the way I pronounced Island when reading (Is land). I only recently found him again on Facebook through another mutual friend of ours. It was great to get in contact with him again. He will be missed I know by all who loved him. I believe that our Lord and Savior needed John to teach in the heavens above and that is why he was called home. I am so sorry to hear of Mr. Smith's passing. He certainly was a well respected and loved teacher who left a memory to alot of his students. I wish all the best to his family and dearest friends. I wish I could thank him one more time for being a great teacher!
